2014 candidate Michael Vasquez in New York

I am Michael Vasquez, and I would like to be your next Congressman for the New York 22nd District.

What are the issues I want to address?

Accountability and Responsibility

The very first issue is perhaps the biggest issue facing the New York 22nd Congressional district, NY State, and the nation. The lack of accountability found among many of those in elected office, especially Congress.

I believe this is primary because from it, all other issues are affected in some way. Whether it is ignoring the will of constituents, or flip-flopping on a vote or campaign promise, if a politician feels that they are safe and without challenge - simply because the burden of challenge is so great - they lose touch with constituents.

As time passes, and the politician becomes more ingrained with the secluded world of D.C. politics, they become more vested in maintaining their power base, and taking actions that negatively impact their constituents. But because of the seclusion from the average American, many politicians never notice that negative. I call this the birth of the American elected nobility.

Members of Congress need to be challenged regularly. To keep them in touch with what constituents want and need. They need to be reminded that their actions are accountable. That at the end of the day, they are what they were before they entered Congress, Americans with the same flaws we all have. That if they do not reflect the people that elected them, they can and will be elected out of office.

Without this, as we have seen in the NY-22, politicians apparently believe they can take any action, vote in any manner and still maintain their position. They flip-flop on the issues and ignore why they were elected to serve.

The New York 22nd Congressional District deserves, and demands, a representative that is decisive, clear, and willing to stand for the beliefs of their constituents. Someone that will engage voters with an honest and informed opinion of the issues debated on the floor of Congress, and fight for what is the will of the NY-22.

I intend to be that representative. Someone who understands the need to work hard, pay bills, and struggle because of the laws enacted in Congress without the accountability of the public in mind. Someone that is looking for solutions to our problems long-term, not just a quick fix answer that will get the politician through the next election cycle.

Accountability without consequence is the same as no accountability at all. That's our Congress today, and the approval rating has reached 9%. I believe it is far past time to remind our elected officials that the consequence for their actions we collectively disapprove of, is that they will be elected out of office just as we elected them in.

My solution:

I believe term limits are needed. If they are doing their job well - 3 terms (6 years) in the House of Representatives, 2 terms (12 years for senior members) in the Senate. This will focus the elected official on getting the job done, and not trying to preserve political power in themselves.

The President has term limits to prevent abuse of power. America landed a man on the moon in 10 years. The examples are before us, Congress needs to change.

If there is an issue that I have not covered, that you believe is essential and being overlooked by Congress and Government, please contact me so I can share my views to all constituents on that. I will do my best to cover all the major issues presented to me, in speeches and here.
